All About Ovulation Induction

Ovulation induction is a fertility treatment that uses medications to stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs. It is used to treat women who do not ovulate on their own, or who ovulate irregularly.

When Is Ovulation Induction Recommended?

Ovulation induction may be recommended for women with a variety of fertility problems, including:

Anovulation: It occurs when the ovaries do not release an egg each month.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): A hormonal disorder that can cause irregular ovulation and other fertility problems.

Endometriosis: A condition in which the tissue that lines the uterus grows outside of the uterus. It can cause infertility, pain, and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Premature ovarian failure: A condition in which the ovaries stop working before the age of 40.

What To Expect During Ovulation Induction?

Evaluation

Your doctor will evaluate your ovulation cycle using blood tests to measure hormone levels at specific cycle stages. They will also conduct an ultrasound to observe follicle development in the ovaries and assess the thickness and appearance of the uterine lining.

Stimulation

To promote the growth of follicles containing eggs, your ovaries will be stimulated with appropriate medications. Your doctor will carefully consider and discuss the most suitable medication or combination of medications for your unique situation.

Monitoring

Your cycle will be closely monitored through ultrasounds and/or blood tests. This monitoring is crucial to track the number and size of developing follicles, ensuring a safe approach that minimizes the risk of a multiple pregnancy.

Timed Intercourse or Artificial Insemination

As you approach ovulation, your doctor will recommend the optimal day for sexual intercourse to enhance your chances of conception. Alternatively, they may suggest intrauterine insemination, where prepared sperm is carefully placed into the uterus.
